Abstract. The article studies the creative heritage of the Karaite artist Mikhail Moiseevich Kazas in the context of the development of Crimean art and the Art Nouveau style in Russia and European countries. The main stages of training and creative development of the master, his contribution to the development of the art of the peninsula in the first decades of the twentieth century are indicated. The influence of famous European artists on the formation of the artist’s style and the main compositional techniques, which were reflected in the graphic works of M. Kazas, is traced. The main style-forming elements that bring his work closer to the artistic heritage of the members of the «World of Art» association are identified, the thematic focus of the works, the main artistic and decorative techniques used in the process of creating the author’s «oriental» plot series are described. An analysis of the characteristic compositional techniques and their similarity with similar techniques, which were most often used by the leading representatives of Russian and European modernity, was carried out. The details of the costumes of the main characters and their significance for solving artistic images in the compositions are revealed. The author’s solution of characters, costumes and decor in such series as «Solomon», «Molla Nasreddin», as well as other works of the author is analyzed. The article indicates the significance of the work of Mikhail Kazas, as one of the few stage designers of the Crimea of the early twentieth century, who pays great attention to the development and search for the silhouette of the costume, the color solution of details and decor. A compositional and stylistic analysis of M. Kazas’ aimed at identifying similar elements in the solution of the costume graphics with the works of masters of Russian and European Art Nouveau.
