Abstract. The protection of natural resources is one of the priorities of developed countries, where the protection of the environment is becoming the norm of every person’s life. Among other things, fashion industry enterprises have a negative impact on the environment. When using rational methods of cutting parts of a sewing product, from 15 to 30 % of the area of the material goes to waste. Currently, it is fashion that affects the style of a person’s consumption. The pursuit of fashion innovations, the low quality of finished products, the lack of skills to rationally make a wardrobe, the reluctance to update clothes contribute to frequent purchases. As a result, tons of used clothing, products not sold on time, and clothing production waste end up in landfills or are incinerated. To solve this problem, a comprehensive approach is needed, including the development of design projects using eco-friendly technologies, the mobility of production processes, the development of resource-saving technologies, the organization of special workshops (workshops) engaged in the processing of recyclable materials into an up-to-date, popular assortment. The objectives of the research are to study modern trends in the development of design and production of clothing under the influence of environmental problems, to determine the prospects for applying the principles of eco-design in the industrial production of clothing. Based on the information studied, the authors identified the directions for the development of eco-design and presented their analysis. It was revealed that the most relevant and economically feasible today is the introduction of upcycling technologies, which are successfully developed by both well-known Western brands and young designers. The article discusses the experience of making bags from garment waste, confirming the prospects of this direction. The main link, without which the development of new directions in the light industry is impossible is the formation of eco-consciousness, which changes the principles of the consumer society to fundamentally new ones.

Keywords: eco-design; reasonable consumption; clothing production; ecology; recycling; innovative development; upcycling
