Methodological approaches to the study of ornament in the modern humanitarian knowledge

Abstract. An ornament is a specific sign system that shows the information about a person’s cognitive attitude to the world around. A characteristic feature of the ornament is a concentrated semantic specific form of expression. It is used in cases when the transfer of the essence by the other means is not possible. It can significantly complicate the study of the artistic image. One of the main problems in the study of ornament is insufficient development of the theoretical base of the research. This fact leads to fragmentary knowledge in this area. The specificity of the ornamental art is an interdisciplinary problem of the Humanities. In the given research the author attempts to describe methodological generalization and complex analysis of the scientific approaches to the study of the ornamental art in the modern humanitarian knowledge. The works of scientists who covered the problem of ornament are classified into relatively independent groups. This fact made it possible to follow the development of theoretical thought on the subject of research. The author of the article systematizes scientific approaches and methods of studying ornaments in art history, cultural studies, philosophy, history, and ethnography. The paradoxical position of modern scientific humanitarian knowledge in relation to the typological features of ornamental art and the primary basis of its imagery also the nature of visual and expressive means is largely predetermined by the specifics of the phenomenon itself and also by the variety of its features and material embodiment. The results of the given research will allow us to deepen the theoretical understanding of the specifics of the ornament and resolve some existing contradictions in this area, as well as serve as a theoretical basis for the subsequent development of methodological principles for its analysis and interpretation. They can also be used in research on the problem of ornament in modern humanitarian knowledge.
