Abstract. The authors in the article consider the formation of glossy magazines. Fashion researchers have found that these publications are an integral part of every woman’s life and affect the reader in a certain way, in fact, shaping his views and behavior. A retrospective of the development of world glossy magazines is considered on the example of Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar, Shape, Vogue, Tatler, Elle. Particular attention is paid in the article to the thematic focus of glossy magazines. It has been established that the targeted thematic focus, along with the visual component, is what each reader chooses for himself. Magazines, through the information and visual range, build a system of reader’s symbolic values: aesthetic, moral, social, gender. Therefore, for a female audience, magazines are focused on segmented layers, taking into account its traditionally established roles: in the family, in the profession, spiritual and religious foundations, and socio-economic status in society. The authors present a diagram of the thematic component of the reviewed glossy magazines. Thus, we can talk about the conceptual and thematic orientation of each printed publication, which is an integral part of the fashion world and forms this fashion world with the help of numerous readers. Glossy fashion and lifestyle magazines claim not only the role of “trendsetters”, but also “lifestyle legislators”, which means that they influence the identification processes of an individual.
