Abstract.<\/strong> The article is devoted to the assessment of waterproofing properties of membrane materials for clothing and footwear. The authors have analyzed the existing standards and instruments for the study of waterproofing properties of textile materials. The disadvantages of membrane materials testing with standard methods and devices are revealed. A method, means and technique for testing the water resistance of membrane materials that correspond to the level of their properties, structural features and operating conditions have been proposed. In contrast to the existing waterproofness testing means, the device has a wider range of hydrostatic pressure measurements, is portable, can be operated from a battery, implements non-destructive method of control, provides continuity of tests when conducting waterproofness tests after modeling of operation or experimental wear of the garment or footwear. Due to the closed test cell and automatic registration of soaking, the device allows to avoid the uncharacteristic stress-strain state of the sample during the test and to identify the moment of water penetration through the material more precisely in comparison with visual registration. This makes it possible to compare the test results of materials different in tensile strength and production method with regard to their structural peculiarities. The criteria are presented and the procedure of evaluation of waterproofing properties of membrane materials for articles of light industry is developed. Using the developed means and methods, tests of ten articles of membrane materials different in the structure of the polymer layer were carried out. Based on the results of the study of maximum withstanding hydrostatic pressure and the rate of soaking before and after simulated operation, the assessment of waterproofing properties of materials used for making kayak sports outfits was carried out. It has been revealed that the best ability to resist hydrostatic pressure among investigated samples are materials containing one-component microporous membranes of hydrophobic polymers. This type of membrane materials is recommended for manufacturing waterproof equipment for kayakers operating in conditions of open water bodies in the autumn-spring period of the year.<\/p>\n
