During the reign of the Emperor Meiji, all attributes of Western civilization, including clothing, became a symbol of belonging to advanced civilization and education. The emperor urged not to copy, but to use the European costume as a source of information, to adopt and improve it so that it would become a symbol of the strength of the nation. The government supported handicraft workshops and weaving mills to create a powerful textile industry. The first joint-stock companies, which united the largest textile enterprises of the country, appeared. In the period from 1883 to the early 90&#8217;s. Kimonos, among other remnants of the &#171;old&#187; culture, were discarded as unnecessary. During the years of reformation in clothing, the Japanese learned to wear Western costume, the mixture of Japanese and European styles gradually disappeared. However, since the early 90&#8217;s. XIX century. In the society there were tendencies to the return and preservation of Japanese traditions as the main elements of self-identification and pride. Fashion for national clothes has become an important economic component of the country&#8217;s life. In the Meiji period, Japan faced two oppositely directed civilizations \u2013 Western and Eastern cultures, as well as conservative and liberal tendencies.
