Insufficient protection of the athlete leads to serious consequences, so the protection of the athlete is given great attention in the production of sportswear. Manufacturers of sports equipment focus on protection elements that, in a general sense, take into account the characteristics of each sport. Protective elements are used in special, household, sportswear and are usually located on the most vulnerable parts of the body, such as shoulder, elbow and knee joints, chest front and back, head. The article deals with general issues related to the appearance and functions of protective elements. A helmet for an ice hockey player was chosen as the subject of a specific analysis. The protective properties are considered from the position of studying the questions «what and from what to protect» and «how and with what to protect». Studying the question «what and from what to protect», the sources are considered, which display the results of studies of injuries in sports, including hockey. Hockey is a very traumatic sport and requires increased attention to the protection of the entire body of the athlete. In the article, attention is paid to the protection of the head, options for force effects on the athlete’s head are considered. In the process of studying the question «how and with what to protect», the constructive solution of helmets was analyzed, which allows to dampen impact and materials that are used in the production of modern helmets for sports games, including hockey. As a result of the study, it was determined that, despite many studies of the ergonomic and protective characteristics of helmets, the issue of designing high-quality protective equipment remains open and requires a comprehensive solution in the development of technical characteristics and design solutions that provide ease of use and the choice of materials that provide the function of protection against impacts and other injuries.

Keywords: sports; sports equipment; hockey helmet; head injuries; protective equipment; protective functions; security elements

Shakhmatova Yuliya Dmitrievna Russian State University named A.N.
