Abstract.<\/strong> In recent years, there has been a significant interest among manufacturers in exotic types of leathers with high consumer properties, which are not only not inferior to leathers made of traditional raw materials, but in a number of physical and mechanical parameters surpass them. Due to this, ostrich leathers have rightfully gained an independent segment in the consumer market of leather goods. The present work is devoted to the development of methodological approaches to assessing the quality of ostrich skins, allowing to form homogeneous production lots for their rational use. In the article it is shown that not all significant from the production point of view areas of hides and their sizes are included in the list and reflected in the existing regulatory documentation, and this in the process of obtaining semi-finished products can cause a significant percentage of losses of valuable tannery raw materials. The author proposed the gradation of ostrich hides, taking into account the requirements of leather production in the Russian Federation, depending on the size: small \u2014 from 30\u201379 dm2<\/sup>; medium \u2014 from 80\u2013119 dm2<\/sup>; large \u2014 from 120\u2013129 dm2<\/sup> and especially large \u2014 over 130 dm2<\/sup>. The established features of qualitative characteristics of ostrich hides formed the basis for the development of criteria of sorting indicators and quality assessment system. The author presented the distribution of hides from ostrich legs into grades depending on the presence and location of malformations. It is proved that in order to form homogeneous production batches of ostrich hides, similarly as for traditional species, picking should be carried out depending on their species, size category and grade, taking into account the presence of vices, including those specific to ostrich hides, their location and frequency of occurrence.<\/p>\n
