A methodology was developed for obtaining anthropometric foot data through 3D scanning for subsequent last design. Special attention was given to the problem of correctly positioning the obtained scans within computer-aided design (CAD) systems to ensure data comparability and result reproducibility.

The study included the development of an experimental foot platform with an optimised profile that enables the acquisition of data from a foot resting on a soft base in a position with a predefined elevation of the heel and toe areas. Additionally, a scanning procedure and an algorithm were proposed for transforming the acquired digital data into a form suitable for creating a custom shoe last within a universal CAD system, followed by algorithm validation. To verify the algorithm’s effectiveness, experiments were conducted using foot scans with varying heel elevations in KOMPAS-3D and Rhinoceros software environments.

As a result, a methodology was developed for acquiring anthropometric data that ensures their structured representation in a digital environment, as well as a positioning algorithm for 3D foot models that formalises the alignment of anatomical landmarks with the coordinate system used for last design. The discussion of the results demonstrates that the proposed approaches form a foundation for standardising the procedures of obtaining and preparing foot anthropometric data, thereby enhancing the accuracy, usability, and objectivity of custom shoe last design in a CAD environment.

Keywords: custom shoe last; 3D shoes modelling; foot anthropometry; 3D foot scanning; CAD systems; positioning algorithm; experimental foot platform

Volkova Anastasiya Alexandrovna Russian State University named A.N.
