Such conditions simulate the operational environment of textile materials in miners’ protective clothing during certain coal mining operations (e.g., mine development) with active ventilation systems.

It was established that the capture of dust particles by textile fabrics occurs in different modes, depending on their fiber composition and weave type. To describe these processes, two dust capture models are proposed: «channel» and «uniform».

The study demonstrates that dust capture in plain weaves with a predominance of polyester fibers follows the «channel» model. In this case, dendritic dust structures form on the yarns, leading to rapid clogging of the fabric’s inter-yarn pores (fields of light). This results in a sharp decline in the sample’s air permeability.

Conversely, dust capture in twill weaves with a high cotton content is described by the «uniform» model. Here, a relatively even distribution of dust particles over the yarn surface is observed. The inter-yarn pores fill with dust less intensively than in the previous case. As a result, these samples retain their initial air permeability for a longer period.

For the quantitative assessment of textile materials’ resistance to dust accumulation and comparative analysis, two criteria are proposed: the specific rate of air permeability degradation (Kу) and the air permeability retention coefficient (Kв). Based on these indicators, the preferable textile material for designing miners’ clothing is identified as an 80 % cotton twill weave fabric (Kу = 24,3 [dm³/(m²·s)] / [g/g]; Kв = 95 %).

Keywords: miner’s workwear; textile fabrics; coal dust; fabric dust holding capacity; fabric air permeability; dust deposition model; cotton fibers; polyester fibers; fabric weave

Abramov Anton Vyacheslavovich Russian State University named A.N.
