Depending on the nature of consumers’ illnesses and the conditions under which garments are used, medical and clothing industry specialists formulate requirements for adaptive clothing (AC).

This article analyzes scientific publications and intellectual property to explore the experience of designing AC in the context of targeted design work. It was determined that strong consumer demand for a variety of adaptive clothing is observed among people with disabilities, including those with cerebral palsy (CP), a characteristic symptom of which is asymmetrical muscular spasticity (AMS), which pathologically alters body composition. Morphoanthropometric analysis revealed that it is advisable to divide the target audience into consumer groups based on the manifestations of CP in order to systematize the adaptation of garments to the specific functioning of the body. The authors found that modern requirements for clothing for consumers with CP are not limited to adapting the design and technology to their morphological characteristics; aesthetics and the ability of the products to provide a therapeutic effect are also important.

The authors’ analysis of the adaptive clothing market revealed that a segment of hybrid products with a moderate therapeutic effect, achieved through the combination of materials with a wide range of properties, including compression of body areas with muscle spasticity, could be developed.

It was proposed to design hybrid adaptive clothing using modern 3D graphics programs with the ability to visualize the image on specially prepared avatars. The first stage of digital design has been completed: a library of avatars in poses typical for consumers with AMS has been created.

Keywords: functional clothing; adaptive clothing; orthopedic disorders; posture; inclusive design; service learning

Getmantseva Varvara Vladimirovna Russian State University named A.N.
