The relevance of the study lies in the need for a meaningful analysis of the evolution of clothing construction techniques in order to critically examine contemporary approaches and predict the ways in which they will develop.

Five key stages in the development of clothing construction are examined sequentially. The first stage, exemplified by Ancient Greece, is characterized by the absence of garment cutting, where clothing consisted of rectangular pieces of fabric that were draped and fastened on the human body. The next stage is examined using the example of Ancient Russia, when cutting was just beginning to emerge and develop. During this period, tunic‑like cuts predominated, and garments were constructed from several panels of fabric sewn together. The following stage is illustrated by France in the 18th century, when clothing was frame‑based in nature. During this period, the method of dividing body measurements emerged, which subsequently laid the foundations for the first cutting systems. The next stage is the era of the scientific approach to clothing construction, namely the 20th century, when state‑developed calculation‑based analytical construction methods for mass production were established and are still in use today. The final stage in the development of clothing construction is the digital technologies of the 21st century, specifically the implementation of CAD (computer‑aided design) systems and 3D modeling, as well as the emergence of the phenomenon of «digital fashion».

Keywords: history of clothing construction; evolution of cutting; Ancient Greece; Ancient Russia; France of the 18th century; calculation‑based analytical methods; 3D modeling

Kozub Lyubov Vasilievna Tyumen State University, Ishim, Russia Ishim Pedagogical Institute named after P.P.
