Abstract. The article is devoted to the study of the role and significance of decorative embroidery in the traditional costume of Kazakhstan. The materials of the research were based on various sources (scientific literature and museum funds), as well as information from the author’s field research among masters of arts and crafts and ethno-designers of Kazakhstan. The article considers samples of traditional Kazakh embroidery from the collections of the Russian Ethnographic Museum (REM), Russian Academy of Science’s Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography (the Kunstkamera), Omsk State Museum of History and Local Lore and a number of Kazakh museums.
Thus, the focus of this study is on ancient samples of Kazakh costume and ethno-design of clothes of modern Kazakhstan (for the use of ancient traditions of embroidery art in its decoration). Ethno-design has been a favourite of many fashion events in Kazakhstan and Central Asia for many decades, where contemporary designers demonstrate the results of their creative searches and experiments with traditional motifs (ornament, embroidery, cutout, images, etc.). Embroidery, which, as before, is a significant element in the decoration of fashionable and up-to-date clothes, is of no small importance here.
The purpose of this article is to study decorative embroidery in traditional Kazakh costume. Hence, the perspective of the study is aimed at reviewing the traditions of Kazakh embroidered clothing, as well as revealing some aspects of creative searches of ethno-designers of Kazakhstan in this context.
The material presented in this article demonstrates the existence of a great variety of embroidered items and insufficient development of some of its issues: genesis, regional specificity, etc. However, there is a gradual increase in the number of embroidered items. At the same time, there is a gradual revival of embroidery traditions and aspirations of modern designers to its rethinking and creative interpretation.
