Abstract. The paper is devoted to the optimization of technological regimes and parameters of the preparatory cycle of production of tanning semi-finished products from ostrich skins to obtain high quality leathers. The relevance of the present study is determined by the novelty of the raw material resource, the lack of scientifically justified approaches to the production of leather from ostrich skins, in particular the technological modes of the preparatory cycle, ensuring their high quality and competitiveness. The object of the study was: skins from the torso of ostrich; tanning semi-finished products obtained by the traditional and experimental technology. The material (ostrich skins) for the studies was obtained from birds of slaughter age (10–14 months) under the conditions of LLC «Russian ostrich». While selecting the optimal parameters of the preparatory operations, the chemical composition of skins before and after operations has been studied; the two-factor mathematical analysis has been applied for the choice, selection and adjustment of parameters and modes of ashing process. In the course of the research, it was shown that the duration of soaking of ostrich skins depends on the method of their preservation. It was found that the optimal time for soaking can be considered 24 hours for wet-salted and 30 hours for dry-salted ostrich skins. It has been proved that the highest values of weight gain of the shank can be achieved with the following technological parameters: concentration of the mass fraction of Ca(OH)2 from 20,0 to 40,0 g/l and the duration of the process about 30 h. The conducted research of influence of different modes of skin and ash removal operations and obtained data enabled to substantiate optimization of technological parameters and modes of obtaining hide from ostrich skins from the torso, and also intermediate operations of mezzing and degreasing are proposed for introducing them into the production process of leather production.
