Abstract. The article considers the role and place of ornaments in the form of textile cells in the system of modern fashion. Attention is focused on the development of the theme «cell» not only in fabrics, but also in knitwear. Within the framework of this problem, knitwear is an important means of expressing fashion and innovative solutions of the artist-fashion designer. The figurative and artistic solution of ornamental cells in knitwear can become the basis of the collection concept and refers to the main tasks of the designer.

The article provides a brief overview of the existing classic examples of Scottish cells both in fabrics and in knitted fabrics and products, which suggests a systematization of the latter. A significant place in the article is devoted to the principles of designing cells in knitwear, both from the standpoint of compositional construction and the possibilities of using appropriate types of raw materials, equipment and weave structures.

In the course of the study, it was revealed that the ornamental cells as the costume develops, become more complicated both in terms of technology, materials and in terms of relations with the costume. The examples presented in the article demonstrate the new qualities and capabilities of a cell in a suit: the use of several types of cells in one image; different rhythmic structure inside the cell (knocked down cell), the imposition of one cell scale on another, not to mention different colors, etc. All these techniques allow you to significantly influence and change the style of the suit depending on the purpose.
