Abstract. The article examines makeup as a plastic, chromatic, and sign-bearing component of a costume ensemble perceived together with clothing, hairstyle, and accessories. The study aims to define the functions of makeup within an integral artistic image and to specify the coordinating actions of the makeup artist during ensemble development. The material comprises twenty-one Russian- and English-language scientific publications from 2021 to 2026 on costume studies, stage costume, appearance perception, cosmetics, and the symbolism of traditional dress. The author applied structural-semiotic examination, compositional analysis, functional modelling, and contextual interpretation. Comparison of the sources identified four relations between makeup and costume: morphological, chromatic, textural, and semantic. Analysis of visual examples clarified how artistic evaluation depends on viewing scale, the position of the facial accent, palette, and surface treatment. The makeup artist’s role includes interpreting the concept, assigning a function to the face, coordinating visual accents, conducting a joint fitting, and checking the result under relevant viewing conditions. A coordination procedure is proposed for competition and bridal formats, taking into account regulations, viewing distance, lighting, event duration, and cultural expectations. The results can support stage, competition, editorial, and bridal image production in which makeup quality is assessed in relation to costume, hairstyle, accessories, and viewing conditions.
