Abstract. This work is devoted to the preservation of traditions and the study of elements of folk culture as an important factor contributing to the formation of national identity and maintaining a special connection with ancestors and roots. Every year there is an increasing interest in national motifs as a source of inspiration in creating a modern artistic image. National culture is an inexhaustible source of inspiration in the creation of modern fashionable light industry products, therefore, designers turn to folk art and traditions, rethinking and complementing them.

The purpose of this work is to study and analyze the national costume as an artistic object; to develop a classification based on the study of elements of the Azerbaijani costume, its silhouette shape, color solutions, ornament, decor in order to develop diagrams, which will be the basis for the development of a method of artistic design of light industry products.

Since its appearance, the costume has been inextricably linked with folk art and has been developing in parallel with it. In the national (folk) costume, characteristic shapes, divisions, decor, and coloristic solution are vividly traced. The artistic techniques used in the objects of folk art, decorative and applied arts reflect originality, uniqueness, uniqueness, thereby forming characteristic features and features that allow identifying the culture of the people.

The article analyzes the constituent elements of the national Azerbaijani costume (clothes, shoes, accessories). The developed classification of the Azerbaijani costume was the basis for the subsequent analysis of the silhouette, the most popular elements of the artistic image, the presence of an ornament, the characteristics of the color scheme, the materials used and the presence of decor, placing the necessary accents that set the style and express the advantages of the owners.
