Abstract. The article deals with the pedagogical process of the study of folk culture on the example of traditional matryoshka painting in the national Mari costume, its role for contemporary art and design. An example of painting dolls with the study of the culture of the Mari people and its national costume. In modern society, there is an acute problem in preserving the traditions of the small peoples of Russia, in the study of their national roots. The task of the modern education system is to involve the younger generation in the study of historical heritage and preserve it for future generations. The Foundation for the stable development of cultural society is the preservation and study of the historical heritage of the people. The development of the culture of human personality depends entirely on the educational process. On the example of matryoshka painting the mythology of the people and traditional costume are studied. The features of form, color, ornament are compared and analyzed, which allows to find new forms for design creative solutions.
