Abstract. The work is devoted to studies of the effect of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) on the properties of semi-finished leather and the possibility of improving its quality through the use of DMSO in ash, pickel and tanning systems. In the course of the experiment, the high dissolving and penetrating ability of the preparation was proved, due to which it was possible to achieve an increase in the physical and mechanical properties, porosity, and hygroscopicity of the leather semi-finished product. It is shown that the strength indices of the samples isolated with the addition of DMSO are in all cases higher than the samples of the control group. The highest tensile strength indicators were determined in the prototypes obtained according to options 6 and 4 with the addition of DMSO in a ratio of 3.0 %:1.5 %:1.5 % and 2.5 %:2.5 %:2.5 % of the mass of raw materials, respectively. In this case, the elongation for option 4 was 57.2 %, and for option 6 – 52 %. In terms of the combination of physical properties, the semi-finished leather product obtained with the use of DMSO was distinguished by high hygienic characteristics of the properties of the skin. The highest porosity values of the semi-finished leather product were determined according to the 3rd and 4th processing options (with the addition of DMSO 2.5 %:0 %:2.5 % and 2.5 %:2.5 %:2.5 %), which averaged 68,0 %. It was found that a significant increase in the concentration of DMSO (3.0 %:3.0 %:3.0 %) causes a noticeable decrease in the studied quality indicators of semi-finished leather. The multifaceted studies carried out made it possible to select and substantiate the optimal ratio of DMSO concentrations – 3.0 %:1.5 %:1.5 % of the mass of the skin in technological processes to improve the quality indicators of the semi-finished leather product.
