Abstract. Special clothing is a protective barrier against harmful factors of production. This is also due to the fact that the problems of ensuring the safety of such clothes come to the fore. This circumstance is mainly due to the need for constant use of personal protective equipment and direct contact with human skin, which increases the possibility of exposure to harmful and dangerous factors on the human body. The problem of safety of textile materials for special clothing remains relevant today, since materials made of chemical fibers and yarns, as well as textile auxiliaries, are increasingly used in order to give products flame-retardant, oil-, water-repellent, anti-electrostatic and other properties.

In order to prevent the negative impact on human health of factors associated with the use of textile materials for special clothing, which pose a potential health hazard, a sanitary and epidemiological assessment was introduced. It includes conducting tests aimed at confirming the conformity of products with current regulatory and methodological documents.

The article touches upon the issue of determining one of the indicators of sanitary and hygienic safety — the «toxicity index» in fabrics for special clothing in explosive conditions. Tests were carried out within the framework of the dissertation research for compliance with GOST 32075 «Textile materials. The method of determining toxicity». The results of testing fabrics of various compositions for special clothing in their original form and after 5 washings are presented. The results confirmed that the problem of toxicity of special purpose fabrics exists and remains after 5 washes. It has been established that 6 extracts from fabrics have a toxic effect and, accordingly, special-purpose fabrics contain harmful substances, and constant contact of human skin with such special clothing can lead to serious and sometimes irreversible consequences. The need to include the indicator «toxicity index» in TR CU 019 «On the safety of personal protective equipment» has been identified.
