Abstract. The article reflects current issues of establishing a crocodile skin species. One of the main materials for sewing elite goods is the skin of a crocodile, the range of which is quite wide due to the large variety of representatives of the crocodile detachment. Skin crocodiles, including various interior items and products of them, belong to objects, which are governed in accordance with the Convention of International Trade of Wild Flora and Fauna, which are threatened. Illegal trade in representatives of wild fauna and flora, their parts and derivatives are one of the important problems of modernity.

Most of the crocodile leather products are produced from abdominal parts, sides and tail, the surface of which is covered with small rectangular shields that form quite correct transverse and longitudinal rows. The authors are represented by the algorithm for determining the taxonomic affiliation of the skin, which is the use of signs based on the morphological features of the topographic sections of animals. When identifying the crocodile leather, depending on the family belonging to the family (Alligatoridae, Crocodylidae, Gavialidae), you should pay attention to the porid-shaped sensory organs, the severity of the collar between the green and ventral shields, the size of the foosencies on the panels, as well as the total location of the shields on the main part of the skin and sides, their size, presence or absence of keel.
