Abstract. Shoes perform an important function in protecting the foot from external unfavorable factors and injuries. It should provide effective and painless movements when performing a wide range of everyday, professional, recreational, and athletic activities. The choice of shoes is influenced by many factors, such as economic, cultural, and functional. However, comfort is often considered one of the most important factors. Comfort, in turn, is a complex and multifaceted concept that every consumer understands in their own way. Also, every consumer wants shoes to serve for many years «without breaking down», and for this, high-quality materials with certain physical, mechanical and operational properties should be used.

The article presents modern research in the field of consumer interest research, which allows us to determine which elements of footwear are of most interest to consumers. Research in the field of shoe sole design, in particular the design of reefs (treads), is considered. It is noted that when designing shoes, priority is given to aesthetic indicators rather than durability indicators. The main types of defects that occur in the soles of shoes, both during the warranty period and during long-term wear, are described. The modern range of soles used in the manufacture of shoes for everyday wear, autumn and spring period is presented. Their structure and overall dimensions are considered and the results of a study on elongation at break are presented.

The object of the study is the soles of shoes for the adult population.
