Abstract. Today, understanding the significance of traditional culture has become one of the main factors in the self-identification of the Chuvash people. In the field of visual arts, this issue is addressed through a focus on the history of previous centuries and the images of national ritual culture, where the national costume plays a crucial role. The author presents an analysis of how Chuvash artists interpret this concept within the framework of the ideological and artistic concepts of the 20th century. Having a complex subject composition, the costume includes several types of decorative and applied art: in addition to weaving and embroidery, there is also beaded sewing, as well as breast and neck ornaments made of silver coins and cowrie shells. A separate element is the unique maiden and female headdresses. The main and most expressive component of the costume is embroidery, which contains signs and symbols of a philosophical nature in its ornamentation. In the Chuvash professional art, which only began in the 1920s, the image of the national costume has evolved over time.
