Abstract. The article discusses the search for design analysis directions in costume design. The work contains a search for methods to study the functioning of the costume in the urban socio-cultural space. Understanding these techniques is an essential part of the design process. Reasons for the relevance of this topic and its significance for determining the composition of design and pre-design research are formulated. Objective: to identify possible approaches to designing research in costume design within an urban socio-cultural environment. Objectives: to determine relevance and research directions, to specify factors influencing the structural and semantic formation of urban costumes, to structure features of research context, summarize experience of researchers in socio-cultural city environment, to identify methods of exploring city spaces for costume design purposes.
Applied research methods: analysis of theoretical works, visual studies, observations of urban environments.
A review of various methodological approaches to qualitative research is conducted. The author proposes and analyzes an interdisciplinary approach. Cultural studies are considered (design is seen as an activity connecting material and artistic culture). Attention is paid to systematizing methodological problems in design (in the socio-cultural context).
The article considers the phenomenon of costume design in connection with the concept of everyday life aesthetics. A detailed analysis is carried out on the elements of daily culture, and the studied material is organized in diagrams and tables.
The necessity of conducting comprehensive interdisciplinary research has been substantiated. The practical significance of the results of this work lies in substantiating the feasibility and importance of applying a socio-cultural approach to pre-design research into costume design.
