Abstract. The authors analyze visual images in the form of didactic illustrations, which are used by the letters of the alphabet. The authors point out that some images are used to explore the letters during several centuries. As an empirical object of study, German and Dutch ABC-books of the 19th and 21st centuries are used. The attention of the authors is drawn to the introduction of the letter «I», which is supported by the image of the Indian. Methods of research are comparative analysis, interpretation, generalization. By analyzing the image of the Indian in the illustrated text-books of the XIX century, it was found that the authors of the ABC-books fully reflected in the didactic illustrations the attributes of the original culture of the costume. Illustrations contain images of specific footwear, head and loincloths, headdresses, jewelry, weapons. Physical fitness is assessed as high, as evidenced by the relief of muscles and poses of Indians. Comparison with images of Indians in modern German and Dutch ABC-books shows that functional and professional markers of the national costume are lost in the ethnic images. The authors note that students are presented with a caricature of the original culture. The author concludes that the dynamic development of culture raises the question of preserving its forms and thoughtful attitude to the ways of its representation.
