Abstract. In this article, in the course of analyzing historical materials describing various changes in the choreographic and theatrical art of China, the author presents the stages of development of stage costume in the second half of the XX century. The study takes into account the main progressive and regressive transformations of the art of the people’s Republic of China and parallel political changes in the country during this historical period. This allowed us to more accurately trace the trends in the development of stage costumes and confirm the point of view of Chinese art historians. The article presents sources of studying semantics in the process of changes in stage costume in China from 1949 to 1996, supported by research by Chinese and domestic scientists. The main source for further research, according to the author, is the Beijing publication «History of the development of modern dance in China (1840–1996)». Museum exhibits and objects of cultural heritage, which the author refers to in the article, are material sources for research and analysis of the semantic meaning of national clothing and stage costume. As well as the basis for artistic analysis of the costume used during the emergence and development of the people’s Republic of China and in modern stage productions. The article is based on the analysis of Chinese literature on art criticism, the history of theater and choreographic arts. In the course of the research, the author also suggests the prevailing significance of choreographic art in the formation of the phrase «stage costume» in the Chinese language and, as a result, in the thinking of the Chinese population.

The article is part of the author’s dissertation research and confirms the inextricable links between scientific and classical fiction in the study of stage costume of modern China.
