Abstract. Today, the fashion industry in the world is the second largest consumer industry after food. According to Roscongress, more than 80 billion garments are sold worldwide every year. The same source states that the global growth of the clothing industry is regularly 10–15 %. According to Fashion United.com, the global turnover of this sector of the economy is over $3 trillion. Among the graduates of universities of costume designers in Russia there are many interesting, creative, talented and abusive youth, quite competitive not only in the realities of Russian reality, but also at the world level. However, after graduating from university, children experience quite a few difficulties associated with professional implementation in their own country, and, as a result, they try to find an application for themselves abroad or, even worse, leave the profession all together. In this article, the author tries to understand the reasons for this situation, analyzes the problems of Russian reality in the fashion industry, in fashion education and in design in general, with the goal of finding ways to solve the problem both at the macro and micro levels. In general, the Russian light industry market has enormous potential. We have talents, we have technologies, and most importantly, we still have a desire to create and undertake.
