Abstract. In modern society, in the context of implementing an ecological approach, research into the concepts of conscious production and consumption and the search for methods to integrate them into the production of light industry products, including clothing, is particularly important. The purpose of this article is to explore technologies aimed at implementing conscious production and consumption, including upcycling as a clothing design and production technology based on an ecological approach to costume design and palimpsest as a method for implementing this technology. The authors demonstrate the need to integrate conscious production and consumption into modern society, including with regard to clothing. The article demonstrates that upcycling is one of the most promising technologies for designing and creating wardrobe items based on sustainable design principles, and that palimpsest can be considered not only as a result of this process but also as a primary method for creatively repurposing obsolete or obsolete items. Six key functions of palimpsest as an upcycling method have been identified, including concealing traces of physical wear; preserving the garment’s history by transforming a defect into an effect; updating the garment’s artistic and figurative design; reviving the garment’s life cycle; transforming the garment’s functional purpose; and achieving the garment’s artistic value. For each function, an essential characteristic is provided, implementation techniques and the nature of their influence on the garment’s form are defined, and the results are illustrated using specific examples.
