Abstract. The article deals with issues of the development of a separate subset of the fashion industry – clothes for people with “irregular” body sizes, known as plus-size, and, in relation to that, history of clothes sizes standardization. Over recent years the term plus-size became familiar to everybody with some interest in fashion. Plus-size clothes is the biggest specialized subset of the fashion market that deals with customers with “irregular” body shape any size. The term plus-size is not strictly scientific and can be applied to indicate any size that is difficult to find in stores of a particular category. The history of plus-size clothes is comparatively new – it starts approximately at the same time when ready to wear clothes appear – in the first decades of twentieth century. The introduction of fixed measures of length gave momentum to applying mathematical theories to garment construction. In the beginning of XIX century a large amount of pattern making books are printed and the first modern pattern making systems appear. The first mentions of specially produced clothes for bigger customers can be found on the pages of industry magazines and newspapers. In publications like this, made by and for fashion professionals, clothes makers and sellers could freely exchange opinions on this specific category of clients. Albert Malsin was one of the first to state that it’s practically impossible to produce clothes for bigger women with common pattern making and grading methods. In time he creates his own three-part sizing system to make better fitting garments for different body shapes. Nowadays one of the most discussed issues is how fat women should dress and how clothes change body shape, both visually and materially.
