Abstract. The article deals with the problem of the evolution of the costume as a process that makes changes not only in the appearance of a person, but above all, expresses his social position, reflects his intelligence. Are Progress and Fashion antagonists or allies? Throughout the history of mankind, scientific and technological progress is inevitably gaining momentum. The objects and processes with which science fiction writers of the last century surprised us have become an everyday necessity for us today. The evolution of the world and our consciousness occurs on a constant basis, often unnoticed. But sometimes this process gives a sharp jump.

And that’s when enlightenment comes, a new understanding of the surrounding reality and your position in it. So at the turn of the century at the beginning of the last century, the Art Nouveau style was born, a style that became a demonstration of new thinking, an expression of the introduction of new technologies into people’s everyday life and consciousness. Literally translated from French, the word «modern» is interpreted as «modern, newest, fresh». And indeed, everything was new: steam engines, airplanes and cars, new architecture and new forms of furniture, new fabrics and new hairstyles, new suit silhouettes. But most importantly, the man himself has become new. The symbiosis of culture and progress and its influence on a person’s worldview is obvious on the example of the Art Nouveau style. The costume in this process acts as a reflection of the evolution of thinking.

Today we live in an interesting and difficult time of another leap of scientific and technical thought. And again, reality leads us to rethink what is happening to us, in modern terms, to a «complete reboot». Someday historians will give this period a name, but in our article we will call it the «Second Modern». After all, the analogies are obvious — innovations in all spheres of our life, the increase in the unthinkable pace of obtaining and processing information. But the main thing for the similarity of the two Moderns highlighted by us is that the growth and improvement of production accelerates the time of creating a «dress». Fashion turns from an aesthetic category into a commercial object, fashion becomes a «commodity». Evolution brings a change in cultural traditions and the emergence of new rules. But the modern generation should not lose track of the lessons of history, because history builds the future.
