Abstract. The article is devoted to a comprehensive examination of the modern urban fashion costume as a phenomenon that affects the development of both fashion and urban culture and the condition of citizens. The work presents the results of research and an applied project that includes personal perceptions and attitudes towards appearance. As a result of theoretical research and experimental project implementation, one of the functions of clothes as a factor in human adaptation to the complex urban environment has been revealed. The authors consider ways to overcome negative elements of urban life with the help of design in clothes.

Purpose: to analyze the relationship between aspects of the social and cultural environment of the city and the design of clothes for the development of ideas for author’s models of clothing.

Tasks: to describe the features of the costume in the urban environment, to clarify the functions of the urban costume, and to determine the directions for costume design. Methods: the use of interdisciplinary scientific research, the study of trends, analysis of theoretical works, visual studies of illustrative materials from Internet sources, observations of the urban environment and author’s experiments. In the course of research, aspects of urban costume design were revealed; features of costume functioning in urban socio-cultural space were identified. Taking into account identified trends, a concept for a collection of clothing for city dwellers was developed and the author’s idea tested — a series of models were made in material. The article provides detailed analysis of stylistics, shaping and color scheme of collection project performed on research topic.

The conclusion is drawn about the feasibility and importance of using a socio-cultural approach in pre-design studies of costume design, along with established methods.
