Abstract. In the presented article, the authors connect the reason for the emergence of the «Russian style» in the 19th century with the goal of a positive representation of Russia in the world. And, as a result, the formation and formation of the «Russian style» took place with the support of the authorities and the public. The statement of some researchers citing the importance and necessity of studying the Russian national artistic heritage and the desire to return the original and the lost is cited. The authors point to a number of socio-political changes in the country that led to the imitation of Western patterns in culture, and also identify the most important events that served to spread the national-patriotic moods in Russian society. Initially, the «Russian style» proved itself in architecture and in decorative and applied art. Despite the fact that the Russian folk costume is a unique cultural heritage, nevertheless, the «Russian style» in the costume was formed much later, only at the beginning of the 20th century. But the form, construction and ornamental motifs of the traditional Russian costume were actively reflected in architecture, in furniture, etc., but for a long time they were not subjected to creative rethinking in the development of modern clothes. Further in his article, the authors identified the main stages in the formation of the «Russian style» in clothing and briefly identified the features of each stage. The authors point out that if for foreign designers the input of elements of the «Russian style» is an element of exoticism, for Russian designers it is an appeal and confirmation of their identity as a «brand from Russia». In addition, as part of their article, the authors identified five levels through which the «Russian style» can be introduced into the modern costume design. And, in the future, according to the authors, the levels they developed will allow modern designers to take a more complete look at design activities, and will also contribute to the search for new and interesting readings of the «Russian style» in a modern suit.
