Abstract. Nowadays the Bashkir traditional costume is undergoing a period of renewal and high demand among professionals and folk craftsmen. Demand for knowledge of traditions of the Bashkir clothing grows year by year, first of all, thanks to such annual events like sabantuys (summer festivals), Town Days and other holidays. However, the brightest indication of honour and respect for national wealth is Traditional Costume Day, which has been held in the Republic of Bashkortostan for several years already. It has the form of a parade where anyone can participate in his/her own traditional costume. In 2018 Traditional Costume Day was registered in the Russian Book of Records as the largest mass helical walk-around in national costumes. According to official data, 1,192 persons participated in the parade of 2018 and 2,700 persons in 2019. In 2020 World Folkloriada was planned to take place, but, unfortunately, due to the pandemic it was postponed to 2021.

The craftsmen’s wishes to make the Bashkir traditional costume independently often come across absence of information on peculiarities of fabricating full-scale patterns of clothing. The existing literature is mainly of ethnographic and art nature, which doesn’t give the full information needed for the tailoring. In this respect, the author discusses a topical issue connected with techniques of fabrication of the Bashkir clothing, particularly, dresses. Value of the national clothing’s modern pattern (except for stylized or dance clothing) is in strict adherence to folk traditions in cutout, techniques, selection of trimmings and decorations.

The author presents his own material from field research carried out in 1998–2005 in territory of the Republic of Bashkortostan and neighboring regions, which shows distinctive features of fabrication technique of the Bashkir dresses, schemes of treatment of knots and cuts. The article’s content includes sketches of dresses’ tailoring, photographs of work pieces from various districts of the Republic of Bashkortostan.

The article is intended for use by clothing design specialists, professional tailors and craftsmen who know technology of sewn products.
