Abstract. The article presents a systematization of approaches to personal wardrobe formation within Russian-language and foreign (English-language) professional discourse. The aim of the study is to identify and compare the main types of wardrobes and to determine their terminological and methodological features. Information sources included academic publications, popular media, and online materials related to the professional practice of stylists. The study employed historical-comparative and terminological analysis.
It was established that modern theory of personal wardrobe design distinguishes four main types of personal wardrobe: «rational», «capsule», «basic», and «smart». Key differences were identified between the English-language tradition of personal wardrobe formation (focusing on individuality and style coherence) and the Russian-language tradition (focusing on functionality and a systematic approach).
The main trends in the development of personal wardrobe design theory and practice at the current stage were formulated: the growing popularity of the rational (primarily capsule) wardrobe concept within the context of sustainable fashion principles; a shift from prescriptive list-based models of an ideal wardrobe to process-oriented methodologies for its creation; growing recognition of stylistic eclecticism as a legitimate wardrobe principle; and the emergence and active improvement of digital tools for wardrobe planning and analysis, enabling the use of quantitative criteria.
Directions for further research related to the quantitative measurement of wardrobe quality and the study of its rationality criteria are proposed. The results can be used not only in scientific research but also in educational programs in fashion design and in the practice of personal stylists.
