Reflection of fashion trends in the Art Nouveau style in the context of the formation of poster art of the late XIX – early XX century

Abstract. The article discusses the characteristic artistic techniques in solving poster forms of Art Nouveau style in the works of famous European artists and the reflection in them of fashion trends in clothing of the late XIX – early XX century. The author studies the images of models as a translation of the main trends in the costume of the studied period and the influence of the art of theatrical and advertising posters on the formation of aesthetic tastes of the audience on the example of works by famous artists such as Aubrey Beardsley, Jules Cher, Pierre Bonnard, Eugene Russe, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Alphonse Mucha. The main attention is paid to the study of costume elements used to create a bright artistic image of models, the origins of the formation of the author’s style of masters are revealed, the most famous graphic works are analyzed. The study identifies the features of the Art Nouveau style in the art of poster art, examines the formal and stylistic solutions and graphic language of theatrical and advertising posters and applied graphics, their functional and artistic purpose. The main artistic solutions used in the process of creating the poster composition, elements of the model’s costume, details of the decor and environment inherent in the Art Nouveau style are revealed, and the origins of the direction formation are analyzed. The role of the ornament, spot, line, color, compositional center and font elements used to create advertising and theatrical posters is indicated. The author proves that posters, posters, graphic illustrations of this period were a kind of historical chronicle of fashion in women’s and men’s costume, which fully reflected the fashion trends in the costume of the period under consideration.
